A healthy lifestyle programme which helps obese young people aged 10 to 17- SHINE

Are you an activity provider working with young people?

A message from Karin Dixon, Senior Health Improvement Specialist NHS North Somerset.

SHINE (Self Help Independence Nutrition and Exercise) is a healthy lifestyle programme which helps obese young people aged 10 to 17 to not only lose weight but to also increase their self esteem and confidence.

The programme aims to help young people understand their weight problem so they can manage it more effectively in an independent way.  This is achieved by not only concentrating on food and eating, but by promoting a complete attitudinal change to lifestyles.  SHINE is holistic and very flexible – we are using the approach in our new maternal healthy weight service and also training health trainers who work with adults.

As part of the review of our childhood healthy weight services I will be appraising various interventions and SHINE will be one of these.  However, whichever intervention we choose, it is likely that the new service will not begin before April 2014 because of the tendering process.  In the meantime we will need to provide support for children and families and I would like to run SHINE programmes so we can compare outcomes with MEND.

That’s the context!  The question I have is whether you/your staff would like to be involved in the SHINE training and therefore be in a position to deliver programmes on a commissioned basis?  The training is 5 days, normally from 9am-3.30pm and will run in June (venue to be confirmed).  The suggested dates for the training are June 3-7th, but this is flexible and could be changed if necessary.

Please give me a call if you have any questions.

Best wishes
Karin
