The Friday feeling...

So we reach the end of another week- difficult to believe that it will be September tomorrow and the start of the new school term.

The Sport's and Active Lifestyle team here at the council have a brilliant opportunity if your interested in setting up a 6 week American Football or Basketball programme. There is funding available however it is limited so it will be on a first come, first serve basis. Both sports are delivered as non contact so cater for both male and female participants, the other benefit of both is that there is a position for everyone on the pitch/ court regardless of fitness, ability or body type.

Delivery needs to take place between October 2012 - March 2013 and must target those aged 16 - 25. Please get in touch with Lisa lisa.perryman@n-somerset.gov.uk for more information.

And finally, have you ever wanted to be able to see all activities local to you on a google map? Plings is a website directory with the ability to search from your chosen criteria and plot activities near you... worth a look. Let me know what you think of it in the comments below...

Hope you all have a nice weekend,

H

Gap year anyone?

Hope your all enjoying the summer... it's turning out to be a truly terrible year for the weather, isn't it? Being a typical Brit I am always surprised by this.

The result of a muddy hike!

However, having just come back from a long weekend camping on the North Devon coast I am pleased to say (in the voice of Braveheart) that 'they may take our sunshine, but they'll never take our laughter'- I think the rain and wind adds another dimension to camping and one must laugh at the thought of pitching what is essentially an overgrown coat hanger on the slop of a hill in gale force winds...

Anyway I have two things to tell you about today:

1) I came across the Funding Central website recently; as an activity provider or Local Commissioning Network member it could prove really useful for you to sign up and its free.

You can set up your very own preference list so you can ensure you'll only receive funding information that is relevant to you...

I will try to highlight any opportunities I come across on here also.

2) If you are working with young people then they may be interested in the youth led charity Restless Development new gap year project, aimed at recent school leavers, students and the voluntary sector.

Please visit the website for more information http://www.restlessdevelopment.org/

Opportunity knocks!

There have been so many opportunities to get involved over the summer months- regardless of the weather! "get involved in what?" I hear you cry, well involved in anything from community events, fetes, festivals to volunteering at your local commissioning network to partaking in the activities that have been put on in your area.

Today, I have some information for you from Ulf Pedderson a local light artist who is hosting an event called
Illumina at Hestercombe Gardens Taunton in September.

I also have some news about the Live UnLtd Launch: Your Call Your Community from the North Somerset Council Sports and Active Lifestyles Team. Your Call Your Community is your chance to change what you want to see in your area, whatever your idea they want to hear from you (ppssttt there is a cash award of up to £2500 to help make your idea happen).

Finally, Westonworks and the Community Learning Team are running FREE job focussed courses aimed at helping you utilise your current skills as well as learning new ones.

If your interested give Westonworks a call on 01934 426 260. The course is aimed at people without a full level 2 qualification.

I hope you find it useful, if you have any information which you feel would be useful to share, please let me know heather.brumby@n-somerset.gov.uk

A brave new world...

Welcome to the first posting of the PLANS Blog!

Positive Links Across North Somerset...

If you want to keep up-to date with developments out there in the communities of North Somerset, then this is the place.

I will use this space to update on the development of the 11 Local Commissioning Networks and Positive Activity provider network including the type of activities they will be offering and ways you can get involved.

I will also be letting you know about funding opportunities that come up and help signpost you in the direction of useful training and various other tips.

The idea of using a blog to share information came from receiving many emails from a range of people about funding opportunities, community fundraising days, special events and other nuggets of information that Local Commissioning Networks and providers of activities may find useful. Email traffic to these networks became heavy and subsequently (and we’re all guilty of this) emails were not read or deleted immediately.

So, it is hoped that by communicating in an informal way such as this blog, you will choose to receive updates, or not! It will be up to you.

If you have any interesting topics you wish me to share, please forward it to me at heather.brumby@n-somerset.gov.uk
