Spotlight on: The Volunteer Network

Volunteering, Training and Support for Young People
by The Volunteer Network

Hello, we’d like to tell you all a little bit about our organization…

The Volunteer Network works across the South West supporting young people to make the most of their skills and opportunities and generally improve their lives through community volunteering.  We support around 2000 young people each year to become volunteers, as well as providing them with a range of training and support opportunities.  At the same time we provide different levels of support to any organization who either wishes to work with young people or who wishes to involve young people as volunteers.

Our two main programmes for young people are:

reAction:  Aimed at anyone aged 16 to 25 who wishes to become a volunteer.  We provide support placements for up to eight weeks after which we run a brokerage service where we match young people to suitable long or short term volunteering opportunities.  From time to time we will run mini projects in local areas of high demand using our mobile classroom. These will be posted on our website as and when they occur. reAction is not a qualification based project but an holistic approach to dealing with each individual's needs.

Kick Start: Aimed at 16-19 year olds with a few limited spaces for those over 19. This is a 12 week programme, where a young person can choose a specific area of interest and follow a course in order to obtain a qualification (Level 1 or 2) supported again by a period of volunteering, linked to their chosen area.  Areas include Working with Animals, Working with the Environment etc.   There is an element of classroom time but we keep this down to a minimum as the main focus of this programme is gaining practical experience. While following the programme young people also learn about teamwork and leadership through a series of outdoor atrivity days and a short residential.  There is also a version of Kick Start that will meet the criteria of the Raising the Participation Age initiative. We provide help with transport, lunch and refreshments on classroom days, activity days and for the residential.

Big Somerset: This is a project targeting community organizations in Somerset, BANES and North Somerset.  The focus of the project is to provide support through training, advice and supervision to any organization that currently works with or intends to work with young people.  We have a range of off the shelf training from level 1 food hygiene to level 3 youth work practice and can also design training to suit the needs of any organization. We also provide a supervision service and advice line for volunteer led organizations and youth clubs.
