Summer Reading Challenge Volunteers

Are you aged 14 or over? Are you looking for something to do this summer? Want to give back to your community? Do you like reading? Looking for great skills and experience for your personal statement or CV?

Why not volunteer with the summer reading challenge at your public library?

Every summer, public libraries, in partnership with The Reading Agency, run the summer reading challenge, which encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six books during the long summer holiday.  Last year 4,382 children across North Somerset took part in the challenge.

There is a different theme each year. Children can read whatever they like - fact books, fiction books, picture books, audio books - just as long as they are borrowed from the library.  The theme for this year's challenge is Mythical Maze.

We are looking for volunteers aged 14 and over to help staff run the challenge by registering children, handing out bookmarks, posters and stickers, talking to children about the books they’ve been reading and presenting them with certificates when they have completed the challenge.

This year volunteers are needed at The Campus, Clevedon, Healthy Living Centre, Long Ashton, Nailsea, Portishead, Weston, Winscombe, Worle and Yatton libraries.  The challenge runs from July to September and we ask volunteers to give a minimum of 12 hours of their time over that period. You do not need any previous experience of volunteering or working in a library, and full training will be given.

For more information about this and other volunteering opportunities contact the volunteering team at North Somerset library service on library.volunteers@n-somerset.gov.uk or call 01275 884 315 / 01934 426 657.

Please apply early to secure a place - the closing date for applications is Saturday 10 May.
